Let me start off then with the desire for the iPad to one day replace my MacBook air (even if it means under a different name). It doesn't need to have the computing horsepower of a MacBook or MacBook Pro ---- as long as I can use standard OSX apps to process videos on iMovie or edit images on iPhoto.

i want to be able to bookmark key phrases that are highlighted by myself. Then transpose them into a separate document, whether it opens in Pages, or Notes, or just another page in eBooks.
for example if i am studying an eTextbook on my iPad i would like to highlight certain parts in orange (for example), and others in blue, etc,. then i would like to have all of the colors listed across the top that i could click on. and when i clicked on it i would have a separate page open with all of the things i highlighted. this would be very helpful for students like myself who could have separate colors for separate quizzes, or chapters for studying the highlighted phrases that i felt would be on the test. |

The more I think about it, the more I realize that highlighting text, even in just a textbook, should be more than a desire for Apple and third-party developers. It's almost a necessity, to be honest. If you want students to pick up the iPad, and replace their physical books where they can take notes and highlight text, then you need to be able to offer the same content, digitally.
With that being said, with ScrollMotion behind the textbooks coming to the iPad, I think we might not have to worry about this feature. As Vincent said, Apple isn't going to put highlighting text in their iBookstore or eBooks, but we could probably expect it from ScrollMotion and their textbooks. |
