Oops. Sorry but work & home life has been crazy and I haven't check this is a while.
The Targus is a great solution as it does NOT require any power supply. The iPad suppies enough via the USB port on the adapter. I suspect any small cheap reader will work. I didn't post the model number because the damn thing has none. the blister pack is long gone and other that the Targus logo, the word "Power" on the power LED and a tiny stick with 1840 on it...there are no markings. I don't know if the 1840 is the model or just a "tested by" sticker.
I have another cheapie lying around somewhere. I'll try that and let you know if it works. I really just walked into Walmart or CVS and bought something off the rack to use with my PCs. The iPad fucntionality was just a bonus.

Hey Dom,
i just asked a question about the Apple CCK and using the Targus memory reader. Can you let me know if the device has it's own power source? In addition what is the model number that worked for you? I need to be able to transfer images from my Canon 7D without carrying the cable, and was hoping to use the iPad as a storage device when I go to South Africa for the world cup. The card reader i have give me a message that it uses too much power.
Hope to hear from you soon.
